DON’T PANIC FLYERS FANS!!

In Philadelphia Flyers on February 13, 2012 at 5:54 pm

Flyers fans lets stress one thing as we suffer through the past month – DON’T PANIC. Easier said than done since the team has gotten 4 wins plus a shootout win and 6 loses plus 3 more shootout loses since January 14. That’s a total of 28 possible points. The Flyers have only earned only 12. The goaltending continues to be erratic. Injuries are still a major problem and there seems to be some frustration mounting among the players, Kimmo Timonen.

We all have to admit that the last month has produced some ugly games including big losses to the Rangers twice, the Devils and the Islanders. A big problem is falling behind early and having to play catch-up. This team just doesn’t seem to have that kind of firepower at even strength and seems to be shorthanded a lot more than they are on the power play. So was does coach Peter Laviolette need to do? Keep the troops from imploding inside the dressing room and get players healthy for the playoffs. If we’ve learned anything in the last few years in all sports it’s about being hot at the end of the season and in to the playoffs. When the Flyers made their latest run to the Stanley Cup Finals they didn’t make the playoffs until winning a shootout in the last game of the season. We watched the St. Louis Cardinals come to town on fire down the regular season stretch and beat the heavily favored Phillies and go on to win the World Series. The Dallas Mavericks were not better than the Miami Heat the entire season but they were in the NBA Finals on the way to the championship. The same can be said for the New York Giants who had to win the last week of the season to take their 9-7 record to the playoffs only to whip everyone they played to win the Super Bowl, and going back a few years, how many times did we see Martin Brodeur stand on his head in the playoffs and carry his teams.

With that said, the team is still 2nd in the Atlantic Division, but losing ground to the Rangers, behind by 7 points right now and they are last in goals allowed in the Atlantic but they are still 3rd overall in points in the Eastern Conference. Another reason not to panic! There are 26 games left on the schedule so, in my opinion, they have 12-14 games to get it together and hit stride for the last 12-14 games heading in to the playoffs. They need to continue to get healthy. The young legs of Claude Giroux, Matt Read and Sean Couturier must stay strong as they go in to the longest season of their careers. On the opposite end Jaromir Jagr, Danny Briere and Scott Hartnell must continue to play well and get healthy. The defense must get better across the board so Timonen, Matt Carle and Braydon Coburn aren’t required to play so many minutes. Most importantly a goaltender needs to stand up and be counted. Ilya Bryzgalov is 19-11-6 with a 2.78 goals against average. Sergie Bobrovsky is 12-7-1 with a 2.90 GGA. Those stats will not win a Stanley Cup.

Remember this, as hard as it is to do, the season is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Many coaches break the schedule in to segments and try to win those segments while shuffling players, fighting injuries, fighting team and player scoring slumps and yes, goaltender slumps. The Flyers still have plenty of time to pull it together and get hot in time for the playoffs. From there we make our run!!!

I got the bug today to find some Phillies gear after having so many discussions about everyones 5 Favorite Phillies of All Time from our earlier post and watching the moving trucks pull out and head to Clearwater for Pitchers and Catchers in a week so I went shopping on shop.com and picked up some early gear. I hope you enjoy. This is becoming my way to shop without ever leaving my easy chair.

Pick Your Favorite All Time Phillie

In Philadelphia Phillies on February 11, 2012 at 11:00 am

After watching a disappointing 1 point 76ers lose to the Clippers last night we woke up to several inches of snow on the ground and it’s still snowing. It made me think that we’re only a week from Pitchers and Catchers reporting to Spring Training in Clearwater. Opening day of April 5 is not far away!!!

What a great time to look back at our favorite Phillies of all time.

Depending on how old you are there are different groups of Phils that you would probably consider your favorites. I’m sure you have your own list but here are a few to jog your memory. Remember you only get to pick 5. It makes it a lot tougher.

1950’s – Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, Del Ennis, Andy Seminick, Jim Konstanty, Willie “Puddin Head” Jones

1960’s – Jim Bunning, Johnny Callison, Richie Allen, Tony Taylor, Cookie Rojas

1970’s & 80’s – Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Pete Rose, Gary Maddox, Larry Bowa, Bob Boone, Tug McGraw, Greg Luzinski

1990’s – John Kruk, Darren Daulton, Lenny Dykstra, Curt Shilling, Dave Hollins, Jim Eisenreich, Mitch Williams

2000’s – Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Roy Halliday, Cole Hamels, Brad Lidge, “Chooch” Ruiz

Here are my 5 favorites Phillies of all time:

  1. Mike Schmidt – I could switch 1 and 2 with no problem. Schmitty played every day, hit 548 Home Runs, won 10 Gold Gloves and 3 MVP’s.
  2. Steve Carlton – There was no one better. Lefty won 329 games with 4,136 strikeouts. He won 4 Cy Young Awards. To put his career in perspective he has 141 more wins and over 1,200 more strikeouts than Halliday who’s arguably the best pitcher of this era.
  3. Brad Lidge – His perfect season in engrained in my head. In 2008 he was 2-0, 1.95 ERA, and 41 saves in 41 opportunities in the regular season and added 7 more saves in the playoffs. This is possibly the greatest season ever by a Phillie at any position. In 4 seasons with the Phils he had 41, 31, 27 and 1 save for 100 regular season saves and 12 post-season saves.
  4. Johnny Callison – My first favorite Phillie as a kid. He played for the Phils from 1960-1969 and hit 185 Home Runs. He was a runner up MVP in 1964 and the All Star game MVP.
  5. Chase Utley – Although it doesn’t look like Chase is going to get the Hall of Fame numbers I thought he was I still just like everything about the way he plays. He’s fundamentally sound player you love to coach and have on your team. As “Harry The K” would say “Chase Utley you are The Man”!!!

The Greatest QB of All Time – Preview

In Greatest QB of All Time on February 8, 2012 at 11:10 pm

Following is our preview to our selection of who we think is the Greatest QB in NFL history. We will announce the results in a few days, however this will give you some food for thought. If you’ve read our posts in the past you know that we try to put a lot of thought and a lot of statistical analysis in to what we publish. This post will be no different. Here’s what we did try to balance the books and make it fair for everyone. Unfortunately the passing era has taken over and makes it impossible to include guys like Otto Graham, Norm Van Brocklin, Bart Starr, Johnny Unites and many others who were all obviously tremendous football players and great leaders. They just didn’t fit in when looking at stats. Maybe in the future we’ll look at the pre-passing era and see what happens. We’ve selected 14 QB’s and 10 statistical categories based on career stats not individual season stats. Also, if the QB didn’t start more than half of his games in a season the stats were not included. An example would be Tom Brady played in only 1 game in 2008 so those stats were not included for that year. Each player was given 14 points if they finished 1st in the category and 1 if they finished 14th. When all 10 categories were calculated the results were added up and the guy with the most points wins. This is not the most sophisticated way but not the worst way of doing it. Also, the only thing included in the post-season was Super Bowl appearances and Super Bowls won. Just because a guy never made the Super Bowl or never won one shouldn’t be held against him. Just as well a guy could be in one Super Bowl and his team gets blown out but he throws for 400+ yards he shouldn’t get extra credit for that. We will provide a list with the 8 regular season categories and then a second list with the Super Bowl s included.

I’ll be honest to tell you I have done of the categories and all of the legwork but haven’t tabulated the results yet because I don’t want to know how it works out until it’s time to publish the results.

Feel free to click RESPOND at the bottom of the post and let us know your opinion. Let the great debate begin!!!!

The statistical categories are as follows:

  • Total Yards Produced versus Teams Total Yards %
  • Career Passing Yards/Game
  • Yards per Pass Attempt
  • Yards per Pass Completion
  • Pass Completion %
  • Pass Interception %
  • Pass TD’s  %
  • Career Game Winning Drives
  • Super Bowls Played In
  • Super Bowls Won

You may want to debate the QB list but they’re all Hall of Famers, future Hall of Famers or Super Bowl Champions so here they are in alphabetic order:

  • Troy Aikman
  • Drew Brees
  • Terry Bradshaw
  • Tom Brady
  • John Elway
  • Brett Favre
  • Dan Fouts
  • Jim Kelly
  • Peyton Manning
  • Dan Marino
  • Joe Montana
  • Ben Roethlisberger
  • Roger Staubach
  • Steve Young
